What is this Service?

To provide accessible recycling to every Australian resident we have launched this recycling service using Australia Post. We send you a recycled, reusable, durable bag, you fill it up and send it back to us. We have a range of price options so you choose how you want to recycle.

What goes in the bags?

Each bag can take different items, please read the product description carefully when you place your order. Your bag will be sent to you with information specific to that bag and what you can place inside and even has a label in the lid so you don’t forget!

Do I have to Subscribe

You have three options:

  • Monthly Subscription: The best option for cash flow! Pay a smaller, monthly rate and as soon as we receive your full bag we send you out a new one. You can set and forget. Access this option here.
  • Auto Renew: Another Set and forget option, purchase your bag up front and as soon as we receive your full your bag we send you out a new one and charge your card, with your approval, at that time.
  • Purchase bags as and when you need them.

Why is the bag fabric?

We want to walk the talk. Sure, postal packs are cheaper and even include a percentage of recycled materials however: For most compostable bags that is often around 5% with 95% of the material in the bag being virgin and compostable, meaning the bags break down too quickly for most of our members.

Our durable fabric bags are made using recycled fabric, and are reusable. Every bag will be washed and reused multiple times and then returned to a fabric recycler to be recycled again into new items. We believe this is the most ethical choice we can make.

Why should I pay for recycling

This is a fair question!

Unfortunately recycling isn’t a free service for us to provide. Besides shipping costs per bag, we also run a processing facility in the ACT which includes purchase of industrial machines, usual business overheads like rent, insurance and governance costs. Due to the success of this program we now also get to employ people. We have chosen to employ adults living with a disability or those who could otherwise not access paid employment to further improve our community. Every dollar you spend not only helps us save the planet but you are providing employment to those in need.

Programs costing can be found here

Are bags the only option?

There are several ways you can recycle with us. Outside the ACT region bags are currently the best option. If you are in the ACT we also provide a wheelie bin service and swap n go tubs supported by our facility.

You can also register as a Town Coordinator here if you want to increase your impact and recycle for a group. Ability to get your lids to the ACT at your own expense is mandatory for Town Coordinators.

If we have enough demand we will explore larger options that can be sent via courier, maybe even door to door. Watch this space.

Why has Lids4Kids changed?

Time and time again the tyranny of distance has thwarted our attempts to get these small items recycled, despite valiant efforts from our amazing volunteers. We’ve heard your cries for accessible recycling so we’ve answered the call the only way we could.

Lids4Kids still recycles bottle lids into sustainable products and we are actively working on innovating more options like 3d printer filament, furniture, building materials and stationery.

In order to continue our innovation and lobbying for change work, skilled staff must be employed. By offering this commercial recycling option we can pay staff to keep the charity running and achieve all our aims.

Who are the beneficiaries of your charity?

Firstly, planet Earth and future generations.

Our members can access The Hub and engage in meaningful activity that support improved mental health outcomes and social integration. We support, on average, 100 regular visitors monthly and another 200 occasional visitors.

We provide free STEM and Recycling education session to schools and community groups. So far we have provided free sessions to over 1700 children and over 4200 adults.

We provide free Social Inclusion sessions managed by a qualified support host for adults living with a disability multiple times per week.

Our partnership with the local authorities has enabled us to provide community service workers and adults living in incarceration with purposeful engagement activities and pre work skills learning opportunities.

Every dollar you spend is improving the Earth as well as our community.
